Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland becomes sluggish. Thyroid gland is responsible for regulating body temperature, heart rate and metabolism. This is why people with hypothyroidism struggle to lose weight.
Here are 5 factors that affect hypothyroidism:
Iodine Deficiency –Iodine is an essential nutrient. Get your iodine levels tested by your healthcare practitioner. If you are deficient, you can use kelp or liquid iodine supplements.
Gut inflammation and food sensitivities –An inflamed gut due to food sensitivities (especially to gluten, gliadin and dairy) will affect thyroid function. Avoid foods such as wheat, rye, barley, oats (gluten-free oats are ok) and replace cow dairy with either goat/sheep dairy or almond/coconut milk.
Insulin resistance –Insulin resistance causes your body to store carbohydrates as fat rather than using them as fuel. This can also lead to health issues such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Reduce your intake of starchy carbohydrates and focus on lean proteins, fibrous carbohydrates (vegetables), some fruit and moderate-high fats (nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut oil, etc).
Adrenal fatigue and stress –High cortisol and fatigues adrenal glands will slow down thyroid function. Take adaptogens (Rhodiola, Ashwagandha, etc) to regulate cortisol. I also like to supplement with Phosphatidyl Serine and high doses of magnesium and L-theanine. Besides this, use stress-management techniques such a breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, adult coloring books, journaling, etc.
Heavy metals and plastics –Exposure to heavy metals through teeth fillings, pesticides, cosmetics, drinking water have been shown to directly affect thyroid function. BPAs from plastic bottles, tupperware, canned food, etc. also slow down thyroid gland.
