When it comes to Insulin, we often think it’s responsible for blood sugar and weight gain. However, our ability to manage Insulin well can affect many other areas of our health as well.
When working with new clients, improving their ability to manage Insulin is one of the first hormones we target. Not only because it supports weight loss but also because it plays a big role in our mood, ability to focus and stay on plan + affects our gut environment as well.
One of the easiest ways to manage Insulin is to improve your food habits and combinations.
The first thing you put in your mouth each day sets your hormonal trend for the entire day!
- Protein & Fats raise Acetylcholine which helps with focus
- While having just carbs only raises Insulin which affect blood sugar levels, increases cravings, mid day crashes and causes weight gain
Poorly managed Insulin, or blood sugar throughout the day, can result in mood challenges. When you spike your blood sugar, you may feel an increase in joy or satisfaction in the moment. But will crash from that shortly after. Do you feel like you ride a blood sugar roller coaster all day with many highs and lows?
This can also cause you to crave more processed or sugar carbs throughout the day or later at night.
Fun Fact: The typical North American breakfast of bagels, cereal, toast, ect. will set you up for mood swings, sugar cravings, energy highs and lows all day.
We already know that Insulin is the hormone of aging, which means it ages our cells in the gut and weakens them. High levels of Insulin, increases Cortisol in the body as well which shows up in the waist area. It creates inflammation in the gut, leading to weight gain.
Its critical to improve Insulin levels so that you can:
- See consistent or sustainable weight loss
- Have less sugar cravings
- Improve gut health
- Optimize hormonal balance
- Lower stress (cortisol) levels
- Stabilize mood and energy levels
